Carly Rae Jepsen won't be returning any more calls from the Boy
Scouts.
Last summer's breakout singing star has canceled her scheduled
appearance at this July's Boy Scouts of America Jamboree, citing the
organization's controversial ban on gay members.
"As an artist who believes in equality for all people, I
will not be participating in the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree this
summer," Jepsen tweeted Tuesday morning. "I always have and will
continue to support the LGBT community on a global level and stay informed on
the ever changing landscape in the ongoing battle for gay rights in this
country and across the globe."
Her about-face comes a day after the band Train pulled out of its
scheduled performance for the same reason; a petition on the site Change.org
began the pressure on the two acts to remove themselves from the concert
roster. GLAAD also supported the petition.
The century-old group has taken heat in recent years for barring
openly gay members; in January, word leaked that it was discussing internally a
lift of the discriminatory ban, but a vote on the matter was punted to its
annual meeting in May.
