"Everything changed about my voice," he tells Rolling
Stone in a new interview. "I don't have the projection. My laugh changed.
The way I used to laugh is kind of like that ‘I'm embarrassed,’ high-pitched
laugh. I don't really laugh that way anymore. I've found new ways around
everything – new ways to talk, new ways to laugh. Now I wonder if I can go
right back to the shape of my voice that I had when I was singing once I can do
what I want to do with it."
Earlier this month, Mayer surprised everyone by playing his first
set in two years at a benefit for firemen in Bozeman, Montana, where the
musician currently lives. The firemen aided Mayer at his house last summer,
when a wildfire threatened its destruction.
Mayer moved to Montana after his first throat surgery to recover
and has remained on hiatus there ever since. In late 2012 he began dating pop
superstar, Katy Perry. When asked how his romance is going, he simply responded
by saying, “I'm quite happy. I'm happy in all aspects of my life."
Mayer appears to be moving with less weight on his shoulders
nowadays. He spoke about not having any trouble in his private life at all,
aside from people "geo-tagging" his whereabouts during nights out on
the town him and how his views of the media have matured.
"On the outset of all this stuff in 2007 and 2008, everybody
was thinking, ‘Well, what does this mean for me? When somebody takes my picture
and they put it up on the Internet the next day and they write stuff about me,
what does this mean for me? What is this going to steal from me?’ And I think
time has shown that nothing will be stolen from you. It's just a photograph of
you and your dumb scarf that you put on because it wouldn't fit in your
suitcase. Cool. If you want to ‘style police’ my day off, that's fine."
Mayer hopes to tour soon, and plans on changing up his
performance style to something a bit more organic, natural and
"palate-cleansing" in the future.
